MERANTAU II
120 x 150 cm
Acrylic on Canvas
2021

This is the image of Rumah Gadang, or Traditional Minangkabau House, and the home of his late grandparents, who were respected educators at Payakumbuh, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Reflecting Jeffrey’s identity and heritage as a Singapore-born Minang, the painting is inspired by sweet childhood memories of the grandeur and hospitality of the Tjaniago family home that once witnessed important ceremonies, customs and family gatherings, yet filled with warmth, love and laughter. Following the spirit of Marantau,” travelling from the homeland for work and livelihood for the family, most usually carried out by the eldest men”. Jeffrey sees his journey, trained as an architect and now working in Singapore and Vietnam. Akin to that of his late father, Wandly Yazid, who moved from West Sumatra to Singapore in the late 40s and had an illustrious career in the film music industry as an acclaimed composer, arranger and musician.
