Born in Wonogiri, Central Java, 1968. He entered the Indonesian Institute of Arts (ISI) college in Yogyakarta in 1987 majoring in painting. graduated in 1996. Until now, he has actively worked and exhibited both groups and solo exhibitions, including in Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Semarang, Bali, Singapore, France and the USA. Bonny Setiawan was born in the suburbs of Solo and grew up in families who enjoy cultural arts activities. His mother and father were painters who loved to read books and loved playing Javanese gamelan. His mother was also a dancer. That's what made Bonny know painting since a young age. At the age of fifteen, Bonny Setiawan dared to leave home and started art high school at SMSR Yogyakarta. In the first year he won the first prize for the drawing competition held by his school. That is what further strengthens his decision to become an artist. He was fortunate to learn academic drawing from a great teacher.
Bonny was fond of his city - Yogyakarta or Yogya, as the Javanese city is lovingly referred to, which is the cultural heart of Java. The culture of Yogya has greatly inspired and influenced his works and the thematic content of his work therefore reflects Javanese people and their traditions, such as herbs sellers, Javanese weddings, and also his favorite Wayang Kulit. Bonny also explores topics that could reflect the life of any large and modern city, illustrating scenes such as carnivals, the circus, mask festivals and shows. Bonny's work is thus defined by a typical combination of traditional and modern life to demonstrate the tensions that are simultaneously at play in the human experience.
